Artist Statement

I am the keeper of many spaces: the floors, the walls, the land, the livestock. As an artist, a farmer, and a woman, my work uses oil paint and video to navigate between lived interior and exterior worlds. At times surprising and even humorous, the work reveals moments of intimacy, maintenance, and care found within an occupation that is just as much about labor and loss. Engagement with land is paralleled by the process of making paint, as I grind dirt into pigment that is the undertone of each painting. The haptic, tactile quality of painting is complemented by the use of a very different medium: video. The camera as a tool is comparatively unobstructive; able to be left and unattended or carried with me as I work. In this way video effectively captures the movement and the sound that the paintings do not.
